Aftermath of Hurricane Helene

Our first JEDI moment of the Fall quarter was a somber one. The impacts of Hurricane Helene have been devastating, particularly for rural communities. For this session, we focused on the effects of damage to transportation and the ways in which aid often needs to be prioritized to communities that are “on the grid”. Our discussion revolved around the idea of climate resilience and how to equitably invest in resources when extreme weather events become more frequent and less predictable. Ideas such as modular housing, standards for insurance schemes, and building platforms for bipartisan discourse around disasters were brought up.
