Kasun’s Escapade in Rural Japanese Water Villages

Today’s JEDI moment was based off Kasun’s expedition to Japan over the summer! He shared his photo-journal and reflections from the trip.

He was interested in understanding how local people perceive their environment. Of special interest was the Kabata water system, which uses water from upstream and creates canals through the houses, which are maintained by the community. This water is used for maintaining plants, cooking, and making tofu. This water is also used to rear fish. Kasun explained how the community does maintenance on the stream stretches. This led to the broader question that we discussed - How can we enable people to engage in the maintenance of traditional and community water systems?
